Recognizing the importance of information technology to the advancement of the role and function of the Auditor General, the Auditor General proudly launches a new portal to replace the Auditor General’s Department Website which was introduced in 2003.

The information on these pages is designed to assist you in understanding the role and function of the Office of the Auditor General   and the Auditor General’s Department and to give you access to the Reports that have been tabled in Parliament. The portal also provides information and source material and sites relevant to auditing standards and the Department’s affiliates at the international level.

The Office of the Auditor General is an independent office. The Auditor General, in accordance with section 117 (1) of the Constitution of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, is appointed by the President of the Republic after consultation with the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition and shall hold office in accordance with section 136 of the Constitution.

In serving the people of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, the Auditor General must audit and report on the public accounts of Trinidad and Tobago and of all officers, courts and authorities of Trinidad and Tobago and is also empowered to carry out audits on financial statements of all state-owned or controlled enterprises. The Reports of the Auditor General must be submitted annually to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the President of the Senate and the Minister of Finance. (Sections 116(2) to (4) of the Constitution).

The staff of the Office of the Auditor General are public officers who form the Auditor General’s Department. Their role is to ensure that Auditor General efficiently discharges these functions thereby enhancing public accountability. (Sections 117(5) to (6) of the Constitution).

The Auditor General

Mr. Majeed Ali - Auditor General  7th April 2015 - Present

Mr. Majeed Ali joined the Auditor General’s Department in 1981 as an Audit Examiner I.  He is the holder of  a Bachelor of Commerce Degree, Honours, with a major in Accounting from the University of Manitoba Canada.  He left the Department in 1983 to pursue further studies at the Algonquin College in Ottawa, Ontario where he obtained a Financial Management Certificate in 1984.  In July 1985, Mr Ali completed his professional accountancy examinations from the Society of Management Accountants of Ontario, Canada.

Comprehensive Auditing

The Auditor General Department is structured to facilitate different types of audits, financial, attest, and compliance, in order to meet statutory requirements of the law.  However, these do not always reflect the policy decisions behind the financial statements and hence the Auditor General embraced the concept of comprehensive auditing in order to provide an objective assessment of Public Sector accountability.  Read more...
